Clinical, Economic and Health Services Research Branch (CEHSRB), within the Division of STD Prevention (DSTDP), National Center for HIV, Viral Hepatitis, STD, and TB Prevention (NCHHSTP) is seeking two exceptional candidates for Medical Officers to serve on the Clinical Team. The positions are for a Medical Officer, GP-602-13. The Clinical, Economics and Health Services Research Branch (CEHSRB) is responsible for several critical areas of DSTDP’s work to provide national leadership, research, policy development, and scientific information to reduce and prevent STDs.

The Clinical Team’s Medical Officers serve as medical experts on STDs for the Branch and Division. They will help draft the STI Treatment Guidelines and will collaborate with the Health Services Research Team and the Modeling, Economics and Statistics Teams in CEHSRB as well as with other DSTDP Branches, and other Divisions in CDC, federal agency partners as well as other external partners such as clinical professional organizations, and primary care associations.  The Clinical Team also manages the National Network of STD Clinical Prevention Training Centers cooperative agreement, which funds eight grantees to provide STD prevention training to clinicians nationwide.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist in updating the STI Treatment Guidelines (https://www.cdc.gov/std/treatment-guidelines/toc.htm)
    • Work with internal and external stakeholders to inform a process to facilitate more frequent updates to the Guidelines
    • Serve as subject matter expert for ≥1 clinical topic
    • Perform systematic literature reviews using standardized methods for transparent, evidence-based recommendations
    • Assist in the dissemination of Guidelines (webinars, presentations, social media, etc.) and development of implementation tools
  • Design research questions/proposals and collaborate across the Branch and Division to execute analyses, write manuscripts, and publish findings
  • Serve as a national STD clinical expert for the Division, Center, and CDC
    • Present at international, national, and local conferences
    • Disseminate clinical information to internal and external partners and stakeholders
    • Utilize social media to convey STD clinical information
  • Provide support to the DSTDP STD Laboratory Reference & Research Branch and the Association of Public Health Laboratories (APHL) on STI testing guidelines
  • Collaborate on clinical research on priority areas for DSTDP including development of peer-reviewed publications and conference presentations
  • May provide STD clinical care

Required Qualifications:

  • MD/DO with training in Internal Medicine, Infectious Diseases, Pediatrics, Adolescent Medicine, Family Medicine, Emergency Medicine, Preventive Medicine or Obstetrics and Gynecology.
  • Clinical and/or research knowledge in STDs
  • Knowledge of state and local public health departments and the core functions of public health
  • Ability to work both independently as part of a team
  • Track record of excellent communication
  • Excellent organizational and analytical skills; ability to handle multiple priorities
  • Excellent public speaking skills

Desired Qualifications:

  • Clinical and research expertise in STDs particularly congenital syphilis, STI syndromes (e.g., urethritis, PID, epididymitis or proctitis) and/or Herpes Simplex Virus
  • Experience working in a sexual health clinic setting, local or state public health department and/or with public health laboratories
  • Masters of Public Health, or Masters of Science (Epidemiology)
  • Track record in peer-reviewed publications and research conference presentations

Percent of Travel Required: 10%

An optional Title 38 Physician and Dentist Pay (PDP) may be authorized in addition to base pay in order to recruit and retain highly qualified physicians.

Moving expenses may be authorized.
