In this video series, Dr. William “Bill” Miller presents guidance on scientific writing with a focus on publication of research manuscripts. Dr. Miller is the editor-in-chief of the journal, Sexually Transmitted Diseases, and previously served as an associate editor for Epidemiology and Sexually Transmitted Infections. Researchers at all skill levels will find it useful. In addition to the videos below, Dr. Miller has developed a Guide to Manuscript Writing.

Session 1 – Manuscript Structure

This session focuses on the content of a research manuscript. After a brief introduction to the entire course, including the reasons that we write, the structure of a manuscript is addressed in detail. Guidance is provided for each section, along with figures and tables.

Session 2 – Editorial and Review

This session addresses the editorial and review process. Guidance in selecting a journal and avoiding predatory journals is provided. The session also addresses responding to a review and how to be a good reviewer.

Session 3 – Communicate Effectively

This session focuses on writing clearly and concisely. Guidance is given at the word, sentence, and paragraph level. Strategies are provided to enhance clarity. This guidance will be useful for all types of scientific writing, including grant proposals.

Session 4 – Write for Your Career

This session addresses the challenges we all face in getting our writing done. Strategies to overcome procrastination and writer’s block are shared.
